Cat Ward

The cat care areas are currently cramped and overcrowded - cats have overtaken dogs in popularity, but HAWS primarily served dogs when the shelter first opened. New, dedicated areas are needed for cats.

Large dogs and small dogs are currently housed together, causing unnecessary stress on smaller breeds. Dogs and cats also need separate medical service areas.

Small Animal Housing

Our shelter was initially constructed at a time when "pocket pets" were almost unheard of. Now, they comprise 10% of our resident population! They also have unique health and care needs.

The success of our Spay-Neuter Initiative Program points toward the ever-growing need in our community for spay-neuter assistance, especially with outdoor/barn cat populations.

Behind the Scenes

HAWS uses every inch of space in our building for day-to-day operations. Mechanical rooms double as cleaning areas for litter boxes, our intake medical room has a constant stream of visitors - both stray and surrendered, and our storeroom has shelves up to the rafters filled with needed supplies. Storage is at such a premium that work spaces often need to double as closets.
