VOLUNTEERING

As a non-profit organization, funding is always tight, and that is why volunteers play an important role. Volunteers allow us to offer high quality care to our animals while helping to contain costs. Volunteers can be found in all aspects of our organization from those who assist with special events to those who work hand in hand with our staff.

As people's lives change so do our volunteer needs. Some of the things we are often looking for help with are:

Special Event Help
From occasional baking for a bake sale to help with our annual dog walk - HAWS Pet Walkathon, we have a variety of events through-out the year that wouldn't be possible with out the help of many dedicated volunteers.

If you are interested in helping with our major events, call our Volunteer Coordinator at 262-542-8851, x120, to ask how you can get involved in our activities like Hops for HAWS and the Annual Pet Walkathon.

Fundraising
Do you like working with people and want to help the animals? Every month, the FRIENDS OF HAWS meet at HAWS to plan and coordinate various activities in support of HAWS. The more help we have, the better we are able to help the animals!

When: The second Wednesday of every month from 7:00-8:00 PM at the HAWS shelter.

Training: Just come to a meeting! At the meeting, ways in which people can help are addressed and you can offer your services when you are able. All adults are welcome to attend.

Greeters
If you like working with people and have availability on the weekends, this is for you! Saturdays and Sundays can get incredibly busy and visitors walking in are often unsure of where to go. We are looking for smiling faces to "man" our lobby, to greet visitors as they walk in and direct them accordingly. Greeters can also point out relevant handouts to inquiring visitors and give informational coloring sheets to kids.

When: Saturdays and Sundays from 1-3 and 3-5, Wednesdays 5-7

Training: Training will be done as requested. Interested candidates should call to schedule a specific training time. You must attend a volunteer orientation before scheduling a training time. You must be 16 or older for this position.

Animal Care and Socialization
We have volunteers that assist the staff with work in the kennels and that provide some one-on-one time for the animals.

If you need community service hours for Huber or the court system please contact HAWS Operations Manager, Mark Hess at 262-542-8851 x108.
Hours obtained through our regular volunteer program will not be valid
.

THINKING ABOUT BECOMING A VOLUNTEER?
Come to a volunteer orientation! All prospective volunteers must attend a volunteer orientation prior to volunteering or filling out the volunteer application. Upcoming volunteer orientations are scheduled as follows:

  • Saturday, September 6th at Noon
  • Wednesday, September 24th at 4:00 pm

At the orientation you will learn what our dedicated volunteers do to help us, you'll fill out the volunteer application, and you'll get a tour of the facilities and learn more about the services we provide. We cover important information at our orientations. If you arrive 10 or more minutes late we will ask you to attend the next orientation. Thank you for your understanding.

Make a difference in the lives of homeless animals by volunteering at HAWS! There are rewarding volunteer opportunities available for dependable people with a little time to spare. For more information, contact the shelter at 262-542-8851, x120.

Volunteers under 18:

  • Age 16 and older may work without adult supervision.
  • Ages 13-15 may work with a parent.
  • Unfortunately, we do not have volunteer opportunitites for children 12 and under at this time.

Parents MUST attend the volunteer orientation with their children ages 13-15. Parents also must accompany their children (ages 13-15) while they are volunteering.
