HAWS BEHAVIOR DEPARTMENT
HAWS' Mod Squad: Not Just a Rerun!
Just as the Mod Squad’s behavior on the old TV show made good things happen for them, HAWS’ new Mod Squad’s behaviors are helping good things happen for the dogs in our shelter.
HAWS’ Mod Squad is a unique group of volunteers that works with special needs animals housed at our shelter. These volunteers are trained to “mod”-ify behavior using a variety of tools and techniques including EZ Walk harnesses, Tellington TTouch®, clickers and interactive toys. Dogs in this program are in several special needs categories, such as those who do not thrive in the shelter environment or have been here overly long; dogs who pass the behavior evaluation but who are not quite ready for adoption; dogs who do not pass the behavior evaluation but might do with a little help; and dogs in our adoption ward who would benefit from a behavior modification program. Activities also provide a source of environmental enrichment for all kenneled dogs.
Dozens of Mod Squad "Grads" have been adopted since the program started in December, 2009!
Would YOU like to help us increase that number? Sponsor the Mod Squad!
While dogs are the current focus of the Mod Squad, its influence will eventually extend to other species. Want to join the Mod Squad? First complete the volunteer orientation and the dog walker orientation. Then email your interest to claudeen@hawspets.org. Can’t join but still want to participate? Donations to the Behavior Department would be welcomed to cover the costs of equipment and supplies.
While the television Mod Squad ran only five seasons, the HAWS Mod Squad is here to stay!
