GET INVOLVED BY VOLUNTEERING!
As a non-profit organization, funding at HAWS
is always tight! That's why volunteers play such
an important role. Volunteers allow us to offer
high-quality care to our animals, while helping
control costs. Volunteers can be found
throughout our organization, from those who
assist with special events to those who work
hand-in-hand with our staff. You, too, can make
a difference in the lives of homeless animals by
volunteering at HAWS. There are many rewarding
volunteer opportunities available for dependable
and caring people with a little free time to give.
Areas Where our Volunteers Assist
Special Event Help: Our Volunteers are critical to the success of special events throughout the year, from bake sales to our annual Pet Walkathon. After all, who knows how HAWS "ticks" better than those of you who spend your many hours here?! Our active volunteers are our best ambassadors, helping introduce those who are new to HAWS who join us at these events. Note: Active volunteers should watch for "help needed" email messages from the Volunteer Coordinator to become involved in special event planning and implementation.
(If your school group, business or organization is interested in becoming involved with our major events, call the Volunteer Coordinator at 262-542-8851, x120 to discuss options available.)
Friends & Fundraising: Do you like working with people and want to help animals? The Friends of HAWS group plans and coordinates various activities in support of HAWS. The more help we have, the better we are able to help the animals!
Greeters: If you like working with people this job is for you! Guests arriving at our shelter are often unsure of where to turn. We're looking for smiling faces to "man" our lobby, to greet our guests as they walk in and direct them accordingly. Greeters can also point out relevant handouts to inquiring visitors. Training for our greeters is done on a per request basis, therefore, interested candidates should call to schedule a specific training time after attending a general information session. Greeters must be 16 or older.
Animal Care and Socialization: Volunteers assist the staff by working in the kennels, walking dogs, socializing cats or small animals, and providing one-on-one playtime for the animals. Special opportunities also exist within our Behavior Department!
Foster Care: Animals in need of home foster care include dogs with behavior or medical issues, orphaned kittens, mom cats and their new litters. Foster responsibilities include general care, socialization and/or medical rehab (mostly for upper respiratory illnesses). Contact the Volunteer Coordinator or stop by the shelter for more information. Download the foster caregiver application here.
Office Help: Volunteers with an attention to detail are encouraged to assist with filing, mailing, projects and assembly of our animal care folders. Those with data entry experience may be asked to assist with more specialized projects on an as-needed basis.
Mobile Adoptions: Outgoing individuals are invited to ride along in our "shelter on wheels" as we visit area businesses, fairs, and festivals, reaching out to the community with the message of responsible pet ownership, collecting donations and promoting our adoptable pets!
Students who wish to volunteer as completion of a service requirement for school must apply for our Student Volunteer Program. Contact the volunteer coordinator directly for more info.
Court-mandated volunteer time must be arranged with Mark Hess, HAWS Facilities Manager, at 262-542-8851, x108. Work hours obtained through our regular volunteer program will not be valid.
Thinking About Becoming a Volunteer?
All prospective volunteers must attend an information session prior to helping at HAWS. These sessions are scheduled on a regular basis. Upcoming information sessions are listed on our upcoming Calendar of Events. Register to become a HAWS Volunteer by completing our Volunteer Information Session Form.
At the information session, you will learn about the services we provide, as well as how our dedicated volunteers help us, and will tour our facility and complete the volunteer application. After this, if you decide to join our program, specific training sessions focused on your area of interest will be required before you begin volunteering.
Kids ages 13-15 may volunteer alongside a parent. Those who are 16-17 years old, may volunteer independently. Parents must accompany their 13-15 year old child and both must volunteer as a team at all times.
Not Old Enough to Volunteer?
How about joining us for Kids 'N Critters Day Camp, K'HAWS Club for 8-12 yr olds, or Critter Club for middle school students? Or, visit our Other Ways to Help page to see what Caring Kids are doing outside of HAWS to help!
For more information, contact HAWS' Volunteer Coordinator, Sara Stoss, at 262-542-8851, x120 or email email@example.com.
